Common obstacles and obstacle avoidance methods in the work of Robotic lawn mower

Lawn mowers may be considered a niche product in China, but they are extremely popular in Europe and the United States. Europe and the United States are deeply influenced by "lawn culture". For European and American families, "mowing the lawn" is a long-standing necessity. It is understood that of the approximately 250 million courtyards in the world, 100 million are in the United States and 80 million are in Europe.

Global garden quantity share

According to data from Grand View Research, the global lawn mower market size will be US$30.4 billion in 2021, with global annual shipments reaching 25 million units, growing at an average annual compound growth rate of 5.7%.
Among them, the overall market penetration rate of smart robot lawn mowers is only 4%, and more than 1 million units will be shipped in 2023.
The industry is in an obvious iteration cycle. Based on the development path of sweeping machines, potential sales are expected to exceed 3 million units in 2028.

At present, the types of lawn mowers used on the market are mainly traditional push-type and riding lawn mowers. With the rapid growth of the number of private gardens around the world, the functions of traditional manual lawn mowers can no longer satisfy people's needs for courtyard lawns. Convenience, intelligence and other multi-dimensional needs for nursing care.

The research and development of new garden lawn mowing robots is urgently needed. Leading Chinese companies such as Worx, Dreame, Baima Shanke, and Yarbo Technology have all launched their own new intelligent lawn mowing robots.

To this end, DYP has launched the first ultrasonic obstacle avoidance sensor specifically for lawn mowing robots. It uses mature and excellent sonic TOF technology to empower lawn mowing robots to become more convenient, cleaner, and smarter, helping the development of the industry.

The current mainstream obstacle avoidance solutions are AI vision, laser, ultrasonic/infrared,etc.

Technical comparison

Common obstacles in the yard:

Obstacles in the courtyard 1

Obstacles in the courtyard 2

Obstacles in the courtyard 3

It can be seen that there are still many obstacles in the courtyard that need to be avoided by the robot, and ultrasonic waves are generally used for objects that the lawn mower robot encounters when working: people and fences, as well as common obstacles in the grass (such as stones, pillars, trash cans, Walls, flowerbed steps, and other larger-shaped objects), the measurement will be worse for bushes, mounds, and thinner poles (the returned sound waves are smaller)

Ultrasonic TOF technology: accurately sense the courtyard environment

The DYP ultrasonic ranging sensor has a measurement blind area as small as 3cm and can accurately detect nearby objects, pillars, steps and obstacles. The sensor with digital communication function can help the equipment decelerate faster.

01.Weed filtering algorithm

Built-in weed filtering algorithm reduces the echo reflection interference caused by weeds and avoids the robot from accidentally triggering the steering

02.Strong resistance to motor interference

Anti-interference circuit design reduces ripple interference generated by the robot motor and improves the robot's working stability

03.Double angle design

The lawn mode is developed according to the scene. The beam angle is flatter and the ground reflection interference is reduced. It is suitable for robots with low-mounted obstacle avoidance sensors.

Yard mowing has become a new blue ocean for economic development that urgently needs to be tapped. However, the premise that the cool work of lawn mowing robots will eventually be replaced by fully automatic cleaning robots must be economical and affordable. How to take the lead in this field depends on the "intelligence" of the robots.
